NEW YORK, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Shares of German sandal maker Birkenstock (BIRK.N) extended their gains on Wednesday, hitting the initial public offering price for the first time, following a buoyant holiday shopping season. The median price target of the 17 analysts covering Birkenstock is $47.21 and the current recommendation is "buy", according to LSEG data. Birkenstock is heavily shorted, with 5.71 million shares worth roughly $259 million having short interest, according to data and analytics firm Ortex. About 32.3 million shares were sold on the IPO.

Musk also repeatedly said, during that call, that Tesla was facing serious challenges with the start of production of its long-awaited Cybertruck. Shares have dropped about 18% since the company's earnings call Oct. 18. We believe that Tesla may have to guide to deliveries below consensus next year AND face lower margins." Bernstein, with its bearish view of Tesla, is forecasting 2.15 million deliveries from Tesla next year with earnings per share of $2.59 compared to the consensus view of 2.3 million deliveries and earnings per share of $3.30. Shares of ON Semiconductor , which supplies chips for EVs, were down 20% Monday after the company offered disappointing Q4 guidance.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 21 (Reuters) - Arm Holdings' stock on Thursday dipped for the first time below its initial public offering price, while short sellers appeared to be betting against the chip designer just a week after its Wall Street debut. Shares of Klaviyo (KVYO.N) which debuted on Wall Street on Wednesday, finished up 2.9% at $33.72 versus the marketing automation firm's $30 IPO price. Suggesting short sellers are betting against Arm, about 14 million of its shares were on loan, equivalent to 8% of the stock's free float, data and analytics company Ortex said. Short sellers borrow stocks to short them, and the relationship between shares on loan and shorted is normally close, according to Ortex. Arm shares appear highly shorted compared to other recent IPOs.

Among other companies that have been gearing up for U.S. stock market listings are German premium footwear maker Birkenstock Holding and Vietnam internet company VNG Corp (VNZ.HNO). Chip designer Arm's stock on Wednesday hit a low of $51.52, coming close to its $51 IPO price in this year's biggest IPO last Thursday. Shares of grocery delivery app Instacart, which debuted Tuesday, fell to a low of $29.96, below their $30 IPO price. Klaviyo also surrendered most of its initial gains, hitting a low for the day of $30.26, just above its $30 IPO price. Arm and Instacart were "pumped up to do the IPO," said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Shares of Arm Holdings fell for a fourth straight session on Wednesday after the chip designer's stellar market debut last week, with short seller interest picking up. That was up from 5.12 million shares on loan, or 2.7% of the stock's free float, on Tuesday. Short sellers need to borrow a stock to short it, and the relationship between shares on loan and shorted is normally quite close, Ortex said. Arm and Instacart were "pumped up to do the IPO," said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia. Arm also has a limited number of publicly traded shares, with SoftBank (9984.T) holding a roughly 90% stake.

With short sellers looking to profit from the stock, it closed at $55.17 after touching a high of $69 on Friday. Arm shares underperformed the Philadelphia semiconductor index (.SOX), which closed down 0.96% on Tuesday as rising bond yields weighed on growth sectors such as technology. Short sellers need to borrow a stock to short it, and the relationship between shares on loan and shorted is normally quite close, according to Ortex. By comparison, Tesla (TSLA.O), a stock with a similar percentage of shorted shares, has a cost to borrow at 0.48%, Ortex said. Arm's higher cost to borrow "can be an indication that the demand to borrow, and short, the stock is high," Hillerberg said.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoAug 4 (Reuters) - Shares of Tupperware Brands (TUP.N) surged 44% on Friday, after the kitchen storage container maker finalized a debt restructuring deal as it attempts a turnaround of its business, reinvigorating retail investors' interest in the company. It was the seventh most traded stock by retail investors at 10:00 a.m. The share gains were reminiscent of eye watering "meme stocks" rallies, where retail investors coordinate on social media and typically focus their speculative bets on companies that were financially struggling or had high short interest. Tupperware was the second most actively traded single stock by retail traders over the past week, according to a J.P.Morgan note.

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - Shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) have been hit by a wave of bearish options bets amid uncertainty over the company's stock conversion plan. While the common shares finished Thursday at $4.52, the APE preferred shares ended the session at $1.86. The move sent AMC’s shares higher, disappointing bearish traders who expected news of a conversion to tank the price. Still, options traders appear to be powering on with their bearish wagers, in effect betting the conversion will eventually go through. On Thursday, AMC shares finished down 10%, while APE shares rose 6%.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJuly 24 (Reuters) - Meme stocks have surged in the last few weeks as retail investors shun pricier stocks for cheaper speculative names, but some experts worry that this could choke the current rally in broader markets. At a time when the wider rally has made some stocks, especially in the tech space, too expensive, the return of meme stocks is offering retail investors a more affordable option to participate in 2023's market rebound and pocket big returns. Roundhill's Meme index (.MEME) hit a one-year high last week and was last up 60% for 2023 so far, dwarfing gains of more than 18% recorded by the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX). Retail investors poured in $1.27 billion per day on average into U.S. equities in July, closing in on the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. The meme index consists of 25 equal-weighted U.S.-listed stocks with a combination of elevated social media activity and high short interest.

July 24 (Reuters) - Shares of retail traders' favorite AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC.N) soared on Monday after a U.S. court blocked the theater chain's stock conversion plan that risked diluting investors' holdings. AMC had told investors it was burning cash at an unsustainable rate and warned that an inability to raise capital could force it into bankruptcy. The company has filed a revised petition for the stock conversion plan addressing the Delaware court's concerns, CEO Adam Aron said on Sunday. The highly shorted AMC common shares were the most traded U.S. stocks at 9:41 a.m. "Trying to short AMC during a short squeeze is about as smart as burning money," said Matthew Tuttle, chief executive offier at Tuttle Capital Management, adding that there is "not much juice left in the squeeze."

July 24 (Reuters) - Meme stock AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC.N) soared in premarket trading on Monday after a judge blocked the theater chain's stock conversion plan that risked diluting investors' holdings in the company. The highly shorted AMC common shares were the most traded across all stocks trading before the opening bell at 05:58 a.m. Preferred shares "APE" fell 2.8% to $1.75. AMC investors had sued the company in February, alleging a plan to convert preferred stock to common stock was enacted to circumvent the will of common stock holders who opposed the issuing of new shares. The company filed a revised petition for a stock conversion plan addressing the Delaware court's concerns over other shareholders, CEO Adam Aron said on Sunday.

July 21 (Reuters) - Shares in Sirius XM Holdings (SIRI.O) were down 10.5% on Friday, erasing some of their dramatic gains in the previous day's session with analysts attributing the volatility to a short squeeze, as well as a rebalance of the Nasdaq 100 (.NDX). U.S. satellite and online radio company, Sirius XM, which is majority owned by Liberty Media (FWONA.O), last traded at $6.99 after closing up 42% at $7.81 on Thursday for its biggest one-day percentage gain since March 2009. A short squeeze is when these investors are forced to quickly cover their bets to limit losses if a stock gains ground instead of falling. "However, the large number of shares held short along with a relatively small float provided fertile ground for a short squeeze as seen on July 20," wrote Macker who estimates a $7.50 fair value for the stock. Evercore analyst Vijay Jayant said the upcoming rebalance of the Nasdaq 100, of which Sirius is a member, was also a factor for the short squeeze as well as related options trading.

July 14 (Reuters) - Shares of Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) jumped 14% on Friday, a day after a short squeeze sent the electric-truck maker's shares soaring in their busiest trading session on record. The stock surged nearly 61% to a more than four-month high on Thursday after Nikola entered a deal to sell 50 EVs to BayoTech and purchase low-carbon hydrogen from the firm. The short squeeze in Nikola, after short sellers rushed to exit bearish bets due to a rise in the stock's price, led to a record 317 million shares traded on Thursday. For the week, Nikola shares have surged 57%. About 22.7% of Nikola shares were in short position on July 12, according to analytics firm Ortex.

July 6 (Reuters) - Retail traders raised their exposure to U.S. stocks in June encouraged by healthy returns, with their focus shifting to electric-vehicle firms from artificial intelligence stocks earlier in the year. They poured in $1.4 billion per day on average in U.S. equities in the month, closing in the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. Record vehicle deliveries by Tesla (TSLA.O), consistently a favorite among the retail crowd, have helped spark small-time investors' interest in EV stocks, including Rivian (RIVN.O), Iachini said. EVs have garnered increased demand on incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act and a competitive pricing environment. In contrast, demand for AI stocks, including C3.ai (AI.N), from retail investors has somewhat slowed from earlier this year after they rallied for weeks, Iachini added.

Overall, shares in European banks are outperforming U.S. peers as they did not face the deposit flight experienced in the United States. "In Europe, hedge funds have rotated out of banks and insurance into financial services in the past couple of months, but still positioning in European banks remains stronger than in U.S. banks," Goldman Sachs said in the report obtained by Reuters. The data shows European investors are more bullish about banks on their own continent, while they have a more neutral approach to U.S. banks. The gap between European hedge funds' positioning in European and U.S. banks has widened mainly after a crisis this year in which U.S.-based bank Silicon Valley Bank and two other lenders failed. Short interest as a share of free float in U.S. banks grew to 2.3% in June from 1.8% in January, while staying stable for European banks, at 0.6%.

May 10 (Reuters) - Shares of highly shorted Upstart Holdings (UPST.O) jumped 32% in early trading on Wednesday, squeezing out bearish investors, after the artificial intelligence-driven lending marketplace secured an additional $2 billion in funding. "(The) committed funding agreements are a concrete step towards stabilizing Upstart's business," said James Faucette, analyst at Morgan Stanley, raising its price target on the stock to $13 from $10. At current levels, short sellers stand to lose about $122 million, according to analytics firm Ortex. "With the price in Upstart jumping up over 30%, some short sellers will try to close their positions... adding additional buy pressure on the stock," said Peter Hillerberg, co-founder of Ortex. The company's net loss per share, excluding items, was 47 cents, beating analysts' estimates of 81 cents loss per share, according to Refinitiv.
NEW YORK, May 10 (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors in Washington are looking into short seller activity around the recent volatility in U.S. bank shares sparked by the failure of three regional lenders since March, a source familiar with the matter said. Short sellers arrange to borrow shares they consider overvalued and sell them in the hopes that if the price drops they can repurchase them for less and pocket the difference. Critics say short sellers hurt companies, but short sellers and advocates say they act as an important check on public firms. Since at least 2021, the Justice Department and the SEC have been investigating potential manipulation by short sellers and hedge funds around the publication of negative research reports. The source did not say whether the latest interest in bank stocks was related to that pre-existing probe.

May 8 (Reuters) - PacWest Bancorp (PACW.O) shares pared early gains on Monday, dragging down other U.S. regional banking stocks, as the Los Angeles-based lender's decision to slash its quarterly dividend failed to stem worries about its financial stability. Other U.S. regional banks also retreated. REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo 1 2The KBW Regional Banking index (.KRX) fell 2.82% after gaining nearly 4.7%. But hedge funds, which often engage in short selling, pushed back on Monday, saying in a letter to Gensler that a ban would be counterproductive. Yellen said it is in the SEC's purview to regulate short selling although there is a high bar for any controls if evidence of market manipulation was found.
May 8 (Reuters) - PacWest Bancorp (PACW.O) shares pared early gains on Monday, dragging down other U.S. regional banking stocks, as the Los Angeles-based lender's decision to slash its quarterly dividend failed to stem worries about its financial stability. "The dividend cut is not a good sign," said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. Other U.S. regional banks also retreated. The KBW Regional Banking index (.KRX) fell 1.5% after gaining nearly 4.7%. "I have a general fear that smaller banks are going to disappear, and we're going to end up with just a few large banks."
US and state officials are assessing whether market manipulation is driving volatility in regional bank stocks, Reuters reported. A banking association is asking the SEC to stop short-bets on bank stocks. The Securities and Exchange Commission calls market manipulation "intentional or willful conduct designed to deceive or defraud investors by controlling or artificially affecting the price of securities." The American Bankers Association is urging the SEC to stop short bets in regional bank stocks. Short sellers pulled in nearly $400 million on Thursday from the sell-off in regional bank stocks, according to data from financial analytics platform Ortex.
A leading banking group called for the SEC to do more to stop speculative short selling in bank stocks. The American Banking Section said social-media speculation about banks was disconnected from their financial reality. "ABA is, however, unalterably opposed to short selling practices that distort the markets through manipulation and abuse," he said. Nichols called for the SEC to take a clearer stance against what he called market manipulation and abusive short selling practices. "The harm caused by short selling that runs counter to economic fundamentals ultimately falls on small investors, who see value destroyed by others' predatory behavior."
Short sellers made $378.9 million in just one day betting against embattled regional banks, data show. Such traders have been selling borrowed bank stocks before buying them back at lower levels once their price falls. Traders profited as fresh turmoil embroiled regional banks this week following First Republic's failure and its takeover by JPMorgan. According to ORTEX, short sellers have made $816 million from the three bank stocks since the start of the year. Last month, ORTEX reported that short bets against Canada's Toronto-Dominion had swollen to $6.1 billion, having become the world's most shorted bank in early April.
"We urge the SEC to consider all its existing tools and to take measures to reduce the avenues for abusive trading practices and restore investor confidence," the group said. "These measures include, at a minimum, a clear message and appropriate enforcement actions against market manipulation and other abusive short selling practices." Short sellers raked in $378.9 million in paper profits on Thursday alone from betting against certain regional banks, according to analytics firm Ortex. ABA President and CEO Rob Nichols told Gensler that short selling could be a legitimate financial tool, but his group was "unalterably opposed to short selling practices that distort the markets through manipulation and abuse." He called on Gensler to send a clear message to market players and take appropriate enforcement action against market manipulation and other abusive short selling practices.
